Polyquaternium-37

Polyquaternium-37 is a synthetic conditioning polymer derived from quaternised cellulose or similar plant-based compounds. It belongs to a family of cationic (positively charged) polymers commonly used in personal care formulations.In skincare, it functions primarily as an antistatic agent and film former. When applied to the skin, it creates a light protective layer that helps reduce friction and imparts a smoother feel to the skin surface.

Polyquaternium-37 works through electrostatic attraction. Its positive charge adheres to the negatively charged outer layer of skin cells, forming a thin, invisible film. This coating smooths surface irregularities and reduces the friction that causes static sensation.The polymer is designed to be light and non-occlusive, so it doesn't create a heavy seal. Instead, it sits on the outermost layers, providing a temporary smoothing effect that typically lasts until the next cleanse.

Polyquaternium-37 is typically used in leave-on products such as serums, lightweight moisturisers, or primer-type formulations. It works best when applied to clean, damp or dry skin. Because it forms a surface layer, it may feel slightly different on very dehydrated skin; pairing it with a hydrating base product can help. Allow 1–2 minutes for the film to set before applying makeup or additional products.

Polyquaternium-37 is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for use on facial skin. It is non-irritating for the vast majority of users, though those with very sensitive skin or known sensitivities to polymers should patch-test first.
