Polyquaternium-2

Polyquaternium-2 is a positively charged polymer (a long-chain molecule) derived from natural cellulose or synthesised in the laboratory. It belongs to a class of ingredients called quaternary ammonium compounds, or quats, which are commonly used in hair and skincare formulations.In skincare products, it functions primarily as a film-former and antistatic agent. It deposits a thin, lightweight layer on the skin surface that can help reduce friction and improve the sensory feel of a product without leaving a heavy residue.

Polyquaternium-2 is positively charged, which allows it to bind to the negatively charged outer layer of skin. This electrostatic attraction causes the polymer to deposit evenly across the surface, creating a thin, invisible film.This film reduces friction between skin cells and minimises the appearance of roughness or static-related texture issues. The effect is temporary and washes away with cleansing.

Polyquaternium-2 is typically found in rinse-off products (cleansers, conditioners) or leave-on formulations like serums and moisturisers.
