Polyurethane-11 is a synthetic polymer derived from polyol and isocyanate compounds. It belongs to the polyurethane family of ingredients commonly used across industries, from textiles to coatings. In skincare formulations, it functions as a film-former—meaning it deposits a thin, continuous layer on the skin's surface.This ingredient is relatively uncommon in skincare products, appearing in only around 0.1% of formulations. Its primary role is to create a protective barrier that can help sustain moisture and provide a smooth texture to cosmetic preparations.

Polyurethane-11 works by forming a continuous polymeric film across the skin surface. When applied, the ingredient adheres to the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin) and creates a coating that can help reduce water evaporation—a process known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL).This film-forming action is temporary and washes away with cleansing. The protective layer remains on the skin's surface rather than penetrating into deeper layers, making it a physical rather than chemical mechanism of action.

Polyurethane-11 is typically used in rinse-off or leave-on formulations where it remains on the skin surface. It is generally well-suited to layering with other skincare products. Allow sufficient drying time before applying subsequent products to maximise the film-forming effect. This ingredient will be removed with standard cleansing.

Polyurethane-11 is generally considered safe for topical use and is well-tolerated by most skin types. Individuals with known sensitivity to polyurethane materials should exercise caution.
