In cosmetics, it functions primarily as an astringent—a compound that creates a tightening or contracting sensation on the skin.
The mineral works by interacting with skin proteins and can influence oil secretion and pigment production. It is often found in formulations designed for oily or combination skin types, though its widespread use remains limited compared to other astringents.
How It Works
Potassium alum acts as an astringent by binding to skin proteins, which causes a contraction or tightening sensation on the epidermis. This physical action can temporarily reduce the appearance of pores and may help moderate sebum secretion.
At a cellular level, preliminary research suggests that anhydrous alum (a heat-treated form) may suppress melanin production by downregulating MITF, a key transcription factor in pigmentation. However, this mechanism has primarily been demonstrated in laboratory cell models rather than on living skin, so translation to practical skincare benefit remains unclear.
