What Is Prunus Persica (Peach) Leaf Extract?

Prunus persica (peach) leaf extract comes from the leaves of the domestic peach plant. For years these leaves have been used as a treatment for internal ailments, such as indigestion, but newer research shows this extract also has value as a skin care ingredient.

Studies demonstrate that peach leaf extract exerts antioxidant benefits when applied topically, mainly due to its flavonoid content. There is also more recent research demonstrating that this extract might inhibit tyrosinase, the primary enzyme whose stimulation is associated with melanin overproduction – though more research is needed before coming to a definitive conclusion.

Use levels of Prunus persica leaf extract in cosmetics ranges from 1–5% when it is part of a water, glycerin, and/or glycol-based blend. This means the actual amount of peach leaf is lower than the recommended use level, a testament to how potent some plant extracts can be.

Benefits for Your Skin

How It Works

The extract's benefits are largely attributed to its polyphenol and flavonoid content. These compounds work as antioxidants, neutralising free radicals that can contribute to skin stress and premature ageing. The emollient properties help soften and smooth the skin surface by supporting moisture retention.

In laboratory studies, peach leaf extract has shown activity in stimulating fibroblast cells (which produce collagen) and supporting angiogenesis (blood vessel formation). However, the extent to which these effects translate to meaningful benefits in topical skincare products remains unclear, as concentrations used in cosmetic formulations are typically very low.

Clinical Evidence & References

In vitro research indicates that peach leaf extract has notable antioxidant activity and may support wound healing markers such as collagen synthesis and cell migration. Studies have detected high levels of polyphenols and flavonoids in ethanol extracts, with promising results in laboratory models of skin repair and anti-ageing activity.

Human clinical evidence is limited. No published trials specifically evaluate the efficacy of this ingredient in skincare products at cosmetic concentrations. The ingredient remains largely understudied in dermatological contexts, so claims about its skin benefits should be considered preliminary rather than established fact.

How to Use

As with most botanical extracts, peach leaf extract is typically a supporting ingredient rather than a standalone active. It is best used as part of a complete skincare routine. There is no specific guidance on optimal usage frequency; follow the instructions on your product's packaging. If introducing a new product containing this ingredient, apply to clean skin and monitor your skin's response over 4–6 weeks.

Safety & Precautions

Peach leaf extract is generally well-tolerated in skincare products. However, occupational exposure to peach tree leaves has been associated with respiratory sensitisation in agricultural workers; this is a relevant consideration for those with known peach pollen allergies, though topical cosmetic exposure presents a different risk profile.
