PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a synthetic fluoropolymer — a large molecule made of carbon and fluorine atoms linked together in a chain. It is widely recognised for its non-stick properties and chemical stability. In skincare formulations, PTFE functions as a bulking agent, adding volume and texture to products without dissolving into the skin.PTFE appears in a very small proportion of skincare products (roughly 0.1%). Its role is primarily textural rather than therapeutic; it helps create a certain consistency or feel in a formulation.

PTFE works as a physical additive rather than through a chemical mechanism. Its polymer chains create a fine particulate structure that blends into creams and lotions, affecting how the product feels and spreads on the skin. Because of its fluorine composition, PTFE is extremely unreactive — it does not break down or interact with water, oils, or other common skincare ingredients.The particles remain largely on the skin surface or within the product film, rather than penetrating into deeper layers.

PTFE-containing products are used like any other skincare item, according to the specific product type (cleanser, moisturiser, etc.). There is no requirement for special application technique or timing. Follow the product's instructions for frequency and use.

PTFE is considered inert and generally well-tolerated in topical skincare formulations. However, products containing PTFE should not be inhaled as powders or aerosols, as inhalation of PTFE particles may pose respiratory concerns.
