What Is Quaternium-33?

Quaternium-33 is a quaternary ammonium compound—a type of cationic (positively charged) surfactant derived from natural or synthetic sources. It functions as a conditioning and antistatic agent, helping to manage the electrical charge that builds up on hair and skin surfaces.

In skincare products, it appears in roughly 0.1% of formulations, typically in rinse-off products or leave-on treatments designed to improve texture and manageability. Its primary role is cosmetic rather than therapeutic.

How It Works

Quaternium-33 works by depositing a positively charged layer onto the skin and hair surface. This counteracts the negative electrical charge that naturally accumulates, which is responsible for static, frizz, and roughness. The result is a smoother, more manageable feel.

As a conditioning agent, it also helps to coat and seal the outer layer, creating a protective barrier that can temporarily reduce moisture loss and improve softness.

Clinical Evidence & References

The ingredient has a long history of safe use in cosmetics, but direct clinical studies examining skin-specific benefits are limited. Most supporting evidence comes from cosmetic performance testing rather than dermatological research.

It is generally recognised as well-tolerated on skin and scalp, though robust published data on efficacy in skincare—as opposed to hair care—applications remains sparse.

How to Use

Quaternium-33 is most effective in rinse-off products such as conditioners or cleansers. In leave-on formulations, it typically appears at very low concentrations and works best when layered with other hydrating or conditioning ingredients. There are no specific usage frequency restrictions; products containing it can be used as directed by the manufacturer.

Safety & Precautions

Quaternium-33 is generally well-tolerated and widely used in cosmetics. It is not known to be a common skin irritant or allergen, though individual sensitivity remains possible in rare cases.
