Quaternium-80 is a quaternary ammonium salt—a type of cationic (positively charged) compound commonly derived from plant-based or synthetic sources. It functions as a conditioning and antistatic agent, helping to improve the feel and manageability of hair fibres.In skincare, quaternium-80 appears in relatively few products (around 0.2% of formulations). Its primary role is to condition and smooth the skin surface, though its use in skincare is considerably less common than in haircare.

Quaternium-80 is cationic, meaning it carries a positive electrical charge. This allows it to adhere to the negatively charged outer layers of skin and hair, where it deposits a thin conditioning film. This film reduces friction between skin cells and external surfaces, improving tactile smoothness and reducing the antistatic effect that can occur with dry or sensitised skin.The mechanism is primarily physical rather than chemical—it works by coating and lubricating the surface rather than penetrating or altering skin structure.
