Quaternium-87

Quaternium-87 is a synthetic quaternary ammonium compound (often called a quat) widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations. It functions as a surfactant and conditioning agent, helping to reduce friction between hair fibres and improve the sensory feel of products.This ingredient is far more common in hair care and cleansing formulations than in skincare; it appears in roughly 0.1% of skincare products. Its primary role is to enhance product performance and texture rather than deliver specific skin benefits.

Quaternium-87 works by reducing friction at the skin surface and between product components. Its chemical structure allows it to bind to the outer layer of skin temporarily, reducing drag and creating a conditioning sensation. This is why it is particularly valued in rinse-off products where this sensory benefit is most noticeable.In skincare specifically, its role is largely formulatory rather than therapeutic; it does not penetrate deeply into the skin or deliver active benefits to underlying skin layers.

Quaternium-87 is most beneficial in rinse-off products such as cleansers, where its conditioning effect is experienced during use. In leave-on skincare, its presence is less noticeable. For best results, use such products as directed; there is no benefit to using higher concentrations, as the ingredient is included at efficacious levels by the formulator.

Quaternium-87 is generally well-tolerated and widely used in cosmetics without safety concerns at approved concentrations. It is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin, though any new product should be patch-tested first.
