What Is Rosa Canina Seed Extract?

Rosa canina seed extract is derived from the seeds of the wild rose plant (Rosa canina L.), native to Europe and Western Asia. The extract contains lipophilic (fat-soluble) compounds including vitamins, fatty acids and polyphenols, which contribute to its composition.

In skincare formulations, it functions as an emollient, humectant and skin conditioning agent. It is used in relatively small concentrations and appears in approximately 0.1% of skincare products.

How It Works

The lipophilic constituents in rosa canina seed extract, including polyphenols and fatty acids, are thought to work through two main mechanisms. First, these compounds can neutralise free radicals, helping to reduce oxidative damage. Second, they may modulate inflammatory pathways in the skin, potentially calming irritation and redness.

As a humectant and emollient, the extract also supports the skin barrier by drawing moisture into the skin and providing a conditioning film on the surface.

Clinical Evidence & References

In vitro and animal studies have demonstrated antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of various rosa canina preparations. However, human clinical trials specifically examining rosa canina seed extract in skincare are limited. Most of the robust clinical evidence relates to oral rose hip preparations used for joint health rather than topical skin applications.

The German Commission E previously found insufficient evidence to approve rose hip preparations for medicinal use, reflecting the gap between traditional use and modern clinical validation. Further human studies would help clarify the extent of benefit when applied topically to skin.

How to Use

Rosa canina seed extract is typically incorporated into serums, oils, moisturisers and other leave-on formulations where it can remain in contact with the skin. As it is used in small concentrations, it works best as part of a broader skincare routine rather than as a standalone ingredient. It can be used daily as part of your regular moisturising step.

Safety & Precautions

Rosa canina seed extract is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations. Those with known sensitivity to rose plants should patch test before regular use.
