What Is Sambucus Nigra Flower Extract?
Sambucus nigra flower extract is the extract of flowers that bloom on a plant commonly known as black elderberry. As is common with many plant-derived skin care ingredients, it has been used for generations in traditional medical applications, with modern-day science backing up its beneficial claims.
Studies show black elderberry flower extract is rich in antioxidant polyphenols and anthocyanins. Research also demonstrates it has anti-inflammatory properties to soothe irritation. There is also evidence pointing to this extract’s ability to inhibit an enzyme that’s responsible for the degradation of collagen – meaning it can help skin remain firmer, longer. The phenolic acids found in black elderberry flower extracts have been shown to inhibit the enzyme that destroys hyaluronic acid, thus maintaining the hydration and moisture binding capacity of skin.
