What Is Santalum Album Extract?
Santalum Album Extract is derived from the heartwood of the Indian sandalwood tree, a plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. The extract contains bioactive compounds, primarily sesquiterpenes such as α-santalol and β-santalol, which give it its characteristic properties.
In skincare formulations, it functions as a skin conditioner and soothing agent. It is relatively uncommon in modern products, appearing in approximately 0.1% of skincare formulations.
How It Works
The active sesquiterpenes in sandalwood extract interact with skin at a biochemical level. α-santalol, the primary active compound, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity in laboratory studies, suggesting it may reduce inflammatory markers and free radical damage.
The extract also appears to have antimicrobial properties that could support skin health, though the mechanisms and clinical relevance in topical skincare require further investigation.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory and animal studies indicate that sandalwood extract and its active compounds have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Some research has examined its effects on skin carcinogenesis in animal models, though these findings do not directly translate to cosmetic skincare claims.
Human clinical evidence specific to topical skincare use is limited. Whilst traditional medicine systems have used sandalwood for skin conditions for centuries, robust clinical trials in modern skincare formulations are lacking. Further research is needed to establish efficacy in typical cosmetic concentrations.
How to Use
Sandalwood extract is typically found in serums, toners, moisturisers and mask formulations. As with any botanical extract, patch testing is advisable if you have particularly sensitive skin. The ingredient works well alongside other soothing botanicals and antioxidants in a skincare routine.
