What Is Santalum Album Oil?
Santalum album oil is an essential oil distilled from the heartwood of the East Indian sandalwood tree. It is a complex mixture of volatile compounds, primarily sesquiterpenes such as α-santalol and β-santalol, which give it its characteristic fragrance and biological properties.
In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a fragrance component, though historical and emerging research suggests it may offer anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal activity when applied topically. It appears in roughly 0.3% of skincare products and is classified as a potential allergen in the EU.
How It Works
The active compounds in sandalwood oil, particularly α-santalol, appear to work through multiple pathways. They may reduce inflammatory signalling in skin cells, potentially making them useful for conditions characterised by redness or irritation. The antimicrobial activity operates through disruption of microbial cell membranes and inhibition of fungal growth.
However, most research to date has been conducted in cell cultures and animal models. Translation to human skin in real-world formulations, at typical concentrations, remains less clearly established.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory and animal studies show promise for sandalwood oil against acne-related bacteria, fungal infections, and inflammatory skin conditions. A limited number of clinical trials suggest potential benefit in acne, psoriasis, eczema, and common warts, with a reportedly favourable safety profile in these contexts.
Evidence in human subjects remains modest in scope. Most clinical data relates to higher concentrations or more concentrated forms of the oil than are typically found in mass-market skincare. Further human trials would help clarify efficacy at the concentrations used in cosmetic products.
How to Use
Sandalwood oil is most commonly encountered as a fragrance component in skincare rather than a standalone active. If using a product containing it, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Patch test first if you have sensitive skin or a history of fragrance sensitivity. Essential oils are potent and should not be applied undiluted to the skin.
