What Is Saponins?
Saponins are naturally occurring compounds found in plants such as soapwort, soapbark, and certain legumes. They have a unique chemical structure that allows them to behave as surfactants—meaning they sit at the boundary between water and oil, helping these two normally incompatible substances mix together.
In skincare formulations, saponins function as gentler cleansing agents and emulsifiers. Unlike many synthetic surfactants, they tend to produce a softer lather and are often chosen for products designed to feel less stripping or irritating.
How It Works
Saponins work through their amphiphilic structure—one end is attracted to water, the other to oils. When applied to skin, they surround oily particles and dirt, allowing them to be rinsed away with water. This mechanism is gentler than many synthetic surfactants because saponins do not strip the skin as aggressively.
As emulsifiers, saponins help create stable mixtures of oils and water-based ingredients, reducing the need for synthetic stabilisers in some formulations.
