What Is Saururus Chinensis Extract?
Saururus chinensis extract is derived from the leaves of Saururus chinensis (also known as lizard's tail), a plant native to East Asia with a long history of use in traditional medicine. The extract contains bioactive compounds, including manassantin B, which influence how skin cells behave and communicate.

How It Works
Saururus chinensis extract works through multiple pathways. In inflammatory conditions, it appears to suppress the production of inflammatory cytokines and reduce immune cell infiltration in the skin, thereby reducing redness and irritation. Histologically, it has been shown to reduce skin thickening and hyperkeratosis—common features of inflamed skin.
For hyperpigmentation, the extract inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme crucial for melanin production. Additionally, manassantin B (a key compound within the extract) disrupts the interaction between melanophilin and myosin Va, two proteins essential for transporting melanosomes from melanocytes to surrounding skin cells, thereby reducing pigment distribution.

In cell culture studies, the extract inhibited melanin production in a dose-dependent manner without damaging melanocytes, and its active component manassantin B was identified as responsible for blocking melanosome transport.
However, human clinical trial data is limited. The evidence base is strongest for anti-inflammatory and melanin-regulating effects in controlled laboratory settings. Further research in human subjects would help clarify optimal concentrations, efficacy timelines, and long-term safety in topical formulations.
