What Is Selenium Aspartate?
Selenium aspartate is an amino acid chelate combining the trace mineral selenium with aspartic acid. Selenium is an essential micronutrient that plays a structural role in selenoproteins — specialised proteins that your body produces to manage oxidative stress and support immune function. In skincare formulations, selenium aspartate is used as a skin conditioning agent.
Unlike topical antioxidants such as vitamin C or niacinamide, selenium works through enzymatic pathways within selenoproteins. When present in adequate amounts systemically (via diet or supplementation), selenium supports the production of glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase — two enzymes that neutralise reactive oxygen species and protect cells from oxidative damage.
How It Works
Selenium aspartate delivers selenium to the skin, where it can be incorporated into selenoproteins. These proteins are then able to catalyse the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides — harmful byproducts of normal cellular metabolism and environmental exposure. By neutralising these reactive molecules before they damage cell membranes and DNA, selenoproteins help preserve skin integrity and slow visible signs of photo-ageing.
The aspartate component aids absorption and bioavailability of the selenium, making it a more stable and absorbable form than inorganic selenium salts.

However, these trials combined multiple ingredients, making it difficult to isolate the effect of selenium aspartate alone.
Most of the robust evidence for selenium comes from nutritional research examining deficiency states rather than topical application in cosmetic products. The concentration and bioavailability of selenium in skincare formulations remain less well characterised than systemic supplementation, so claims about topical efficacy should be approached with appropriate caution.
