Shea Butter Polyglyceryl-4 Esters

Shea Butter Polyglyceryl-4 Esters is a modified form of shea butter, created by combining shea butter with polyglycerols. This process transforms the natural fat into an ingredient that functions both as an emollient and an emulsion stabiliser — meaning it softens the skin whilst also helping oil and water-based ingredients mix evenly in a formula.Unlike raw shea butter, this esterified version has different solubility properties, making it easier to incorporate into lightweight creams, serums, and cleansers without leaving a heavy residue.

Shea Butter Polyglyceryl-4 Esters works through two mechanisms. As an emollient, it deposits a light conditioning film on the skin surface, filling micro-gaps in the outer layer and reducing water loss. This creates a softer, smoother appearance without occlusion.As an emulsion stabiliser, the molecule has both water-loving and oil-loving regions. This allows it to sit at the boundary between oil and water phases in a formulation, holding them together and preventing separation — which is why products containing it tend to have a stable, uniform texture throughout their shelf life.

This ingredient is typically incorporated into finished skincare products during manufacture, so you do not apply it separately. Look for it in the ingredient list of moisturisers, cleansers, and conditioning serums if you wish to include it in your routine. Use the product as directed on the label, usually once or twice daily depending on skin type and the product's purpose.

Generally well-tolerated by most skin types. Those with shea nut allergy should avoid products containing shea derivatives. Unlikely to cause irritation at cosmetic concentrations.
