Sodium Cocoyl Methyl Isethionate

Sodium cocoyl methyl isethionate (SCMI) is a surfactant derived from coconut oil. It functions as a mild cleansing agent that helps to remove oils, dirt and makeup from the skin's surface.As a surfactant, it works by reducing the surface tension of water, allowing oil and water to mix more easily so that impurities can be rinsed away. It is commonly found in facial cleansers, body washes and shampoos where a gentler cleansing action is desired.

Sodium cocoyl methyl isethionate is an anionic surfactant, meaning it has negatively charged molecules. One end of these molecules attaches to oily substances, whilst the other end is attracted to water, allowing oils to be suspended in water and rinsed away.Unlike harsher surfactants, SCMI has a relatively mild molecular structure that is less likely to disrupt the skin's lipid barrier or cause dryness, making it a popular choice in formulations designed for sensitive or compromised skin.

Use as directed on the product label, typically by wetting the skin with lukewarm water, applying a small amount, gently massaging, and rinsing thoroughly. Because SCMI is mild, it works well for daily use in cleansers. If using in a cleanser, follow with your usual toner or moisturiser to maintain hydration.

Sodium cocoyl methyl isethionate is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for use in cosmetics. However, as with any surfactant, it may cause irritation in individuals with severe sensitivity or if formulations are too concentrated.
