What Is Sodium Cocoyl Taurate?
Sodium cocoyl taurate is an anionic surfactant derived from coconut oil. It is created through the chemical combination of coconut fatty acids with taurine, an amino acid. This produces a cleansing agent that reduces the surface tension of water, allowing it to lift oils, dirt, and other residues from the skin and scalp.
As a surfactant, it functions by having one end that bonds to water and another that bonds to oils. This dual affinity means it can suspend both water and oil-soluble substances so they can be rinsed away. It is commonly used in facial cleansers, body washes, and shampoos.
How It Works
Sodium cocoyl taurate works by positioning itself at the boundary between oil and water. The water-loving end (hydrophilic) orients towards the aqueous phase, while the oil-loving end (lipophilic) attaches to sebum, makeup, and oil-based impurities. This encapsulation allows these substances to be suspended in water and rinsed away.
In shampoo and conditioning formulations, it can also interact with polymers and other actives to help deposit beneficial ingredients onto the scalp and strands, a process known as coacervation. This means it may help distribute conditioning agents evenly during use.
