Sodium Guaiazulene Sulfonate

Sodium guaiazulene sulfonate is a water-soluble, chemically modified form of guaiazulene—a natural compound found in chamomile and yarrow essential oils. The addition of a sulphonate group makes it stable and suitable for use in skincare formulations, where it functions primarily as a mild surfactant.Unlike harsher surfactants, sodium guaiazulene sulfonate is designed to cleanse without stripping, and retains some of the traditional anti-inflammatory and soothing properties associated with guaiazulene itself.

As a surfactant, sodium guaiazulene sulfonate works by lowering the surface tension of water, allowing it to lift oils, dirt, and other impurities from the skin more effectively. Its molecular structure allows it to bind to both water and oil-based substances, making it an efficient cleansing agent.The guaiazulene moiety may contribute additional soothing effects through its known anti-inflammatory behaviour, though the extent to which this is retained after sulphonation is not extensively documented in published research.
