What Is Sodium Hempseedamphoacetate?
Sodium hempseedamphoacetate is a surfactant derived from hemp seed oil. Surfactants are molecules with a dual nature: one end is water-loving and the other is oil-loving, allowing them to bind to both water and oils. This makes them effective cleansing agents capable of removing dirt, makeup and excess sebum from the skin.
As a plant-derived surfactant, it belongs to a category of gentler cleansing agents compared to traditional harsh synthetics, though efficacy and mildness depend on formulation concentration and the presence of other ingredients.
How It Works
The ingredient works by surrounding oil and dirt particles with its molecules, allowing them to be suspended in water and rinsed away. The oil-loving portion attaches to sebum and makeup residue, whilst the water-loving portion interacts with water, creating an emulsion that flows away during cleansing.
Because it is amphoacetic (containing both acidic and basic chemical groups), it may offer some buffering capacity and can remain effective across a range of pH levels, making it a versatile choice for different cleanser formulations.
Clinical Evidence & References
Published research specifically evaluating sodium hempseedamphoacetate as a skincare ingredient is limited. Most evidence comes from the broader category of plant-derived surfactants, which generally perform comparably to conventional surfactants in cleansing efficacy whilst potentially offering a milder profile.
The ingredient is well-established in cosmetic formulations and has a history of use without significant safety concerns reported. However, individual skin tolerance will depend on overall formulation strength, pH and the presence of other ingredients.
How to Use
Use sodium hempseedamphoacetate-containing cleansers as directed on the product label, typically once or twice daily. For best results, massage the cleanser gently over damp skin, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. If used in a foaming cleanser, a small amount will typically generate sufficient lather to cleanse effectively.
