Sodium Lauroyl Aspartate

Sodium lauroyl aspartate is a surfactant derived from the amino acid aspartic acid and lauric acid (a naturally occurring fatty acid). It belongs to a class of gentler synthetic cleansers designed to remove oil, dirt and makeup whilst maintaining skin comfort.As a surfactant, it reduces the surface tension of water, allowing oil and water to mix. This enables it to lift impurities from the skin surface and hair without requiring harsh scrubbing. It is used primarily in facial cleansers and hair conditioning formulations.

Sodium lauroyl aspartate molecules have two distinct parts: one end is attracted to oil and the other to water. When applied to skin, these molecules surround oil droplets and dirt particles, preventing them from re-depositing on the skin and allowing them to rinse away with water.Unlike harsher surfactants, the aspartate component adds a conditioning element that helps minimise disruption to the skin's natural lipid barrier, making this ingredient suitable for use in everyday cleansers.

Use as directed on product labels, typically once or twice daily as part of your cleansing routine. Apply to damp skin, massage gently, then rinse thoroughly with water. Because this ingredient is relatively mild, it can be used daily without concern for most skin types. If combining with other active ingredients (such as retinoids or acids), cleanse first with this ingredient before applying treatments.

Sodium lauroyl aspartate is generally well-tolerated and regarded as safe for use in rinse-off products. It is less likely to cause irritation or disruption to the skin barrier than conventional sulphate-based surfactants, though patch testing is advisable for those with very sensitive or compromised skin.
