What Is Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate?

Sodium lauroyl glycinate is a mild surfactant derived from lauric acid (a naturally occurring fatty acid) and glycine (an amino acid). It functions as a cleansing agent that helps lift oils, makeup and debris from the skin surface and pores.

Unlike harsher sulphate-based cleansers, sodium lauroyl glycinate is designed to be gentler whilst still effective at cleansing. It appears in roughly 0.1% of skincare formulations, often found in facial cleansers, body washes and micellar solutions where a soft touch is prioritised.

How It Works

Surfactants like sodium lauroyl glycinate have a molecular structure that is attracted to both water and oil. One end of the molecule binds to oily substances (including sebum and makeup), whilst the other end binds to water, allowing oils to be rinsed away during cleansing.

Because sodium lauroyl glycinate is derived from an amino acid, it tends to be less drying than conventional sulphate surfactants. This gentler approach means it can remove dirt and excess oil without significantly compromising the skin's protective lipid layer.

Clinical Evidence & References

Sodium lauroyl glycinate is well-established in cosmetic chemistry as a mild surfactant, and its amino acid origin is generally associated with lower irritancy profiles. However, dedicated clinical studies specifically measuring its efficacy or tolerability in skincare formulations remain limited in published literature.

It is recognised by cosmetic safety authorities as safe for use in rinse-off products at typical concentrations. Real-world use suggests it performs well for those seeking a non-irritating cleanser, though individual responses may vary depending on skin sensitivity and formulation context.

How to Use

Use sodium lauroyl glycinate-based cleansers as part of your regular cleansing routine—typically morning and evening, or as directed on the product label. Wet the face with lukewarm water, apply a small amount of cleanser, massage gently for 30-60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly. Because it is mild, it is less likely to cause dryness with frequent use, making it a good choice for daily cleansing.

Safety & Precautions

Sodium lauroyl glycinate is generally well-tolerated and recognised as safe by cosmetic authorities. It is unlikely to cause irritation in most people, though individual sensitivity varies; discontinue use if redness, stinging or excessive dryness develops.
