What Is Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate?
Sodium lauroyl isethionate is a mild anionic surfactant derived from coconut oil. It functions as a cleansing agent that helps water and oil mix together, allowing dirt, sebum, and makeup to be rinsed away effectively.
Unlike harsher surfactants, this ingredient is designed to be gentler on the skin barrier whilst still delivering effective cleansing. It's commonly found in facial cleansers, body washes, and some conditioning products, where it contributes both cleansing and mild conditioning properties.
How It Works
Surfactants have a molecular structure with one end that attracts water and another that attracts oil. This allows them to surround dirt and oils on the skin, lifting them away so they can be rinsed off with water.
Sodium lauroyl isethionate is considered a milder surfactant because it causes less disruption to the skin's natural lipid barrier compared to stronger cleansing agents. This means it can effectively clean whilst being less likely to trigger irritation or dryness in most people.
Clinical Evidence & References
Sodium lauroyl isethionate is well-established in the cosmetic industry and has a long history of safe use. It is recognised as a gentler alternative to more aggressive surfactants like sodium lauryl sulphate.
Limited independent clinical research specifically isolates this ingredient, so evidence largely comes from decades of consumer use and formulators' experience. It is generally considered non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin, though individual tolerance varies.
How to Use
This ingredient is typically used in rinse-off products like cleansers, so you don't need to worry about concentration or frequency — simply use your cleanser as directed, usually morning and evening or as needed. If you have very reactive skin, you can patch test first, though adverse reactions are uncommon.
