Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate

Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate is a synthetic surfactant derived from coconut or palm oil. It belongs to the sulfoacetate family of cleansing agents, which are chemically gentler than traditional sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate, whilst retaining effective cleansing properties.In skincare products, it works as a cleanser and foaming agent, helping to lift dirt, sebum, and makeup from the skin's surface. It is found in a small proportion of skincare formulations, particularly in gentle cleansers and micellar solutions.

Like all surfactants, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate has a molecular structure with two opposing ends: one that attracts water and one that attracts oil. This dual nature allows it to encapsulate sebum and impurities, suspending them in water so they can be rinsed away.The acetate component of its name indicates a modified structure compared to standard sulfates, which generally results in less disruption to the skin barrier and reduced irritation risk during cleansing.

Use sodium lauryl sulfoacetate-based cleansers once or twice daily as part of your regular cleansing routine. Apply to damp skin, massage gently, and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. It is well-suited to use in both morning and evening cleansing routines, and may be particularly helpful if you have previously experienced irritation from standard sulfate cleansers.

Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate is generally well-tolerated and regarded as a safer alternative to harsher sulfates. It is unlikely to cause irritation in most people, though those with severe sensitivity or compromised barrier function should patch test first.
