Sodium Methyl 2-Sulfolaurate

Sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate is a synthetic surfactant derived from lauric acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid. It belongs to a class of cleansing agents called sulphonated surfactants, which are designed to remove oils and impurities from the skin's surface whilst maintaining a gentle profile.In skincare products, it primarily functions as a cleanser and foaming agent. Its mild nature means it's often chosen for formulations intended for sensitive or delicate skin, as it tends to be less stripping than stronger surfactants.

Surfactants are amphiphilic molecules, meaning they have both water-loving and oil-loving ends. Sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate positions itself between oil and water, breaking up sebum and dirt into smaller particles that can be rinsed away with water. This allows it to cleanse without requiring harsh scrubbing or caustic pH levels.Because it's a milder surfactant, it generally produces less inflammation at the skin surface compared to stronger detergents, which can be an advantage for those with sensitive or compromised skin barriers.
