Sodium Nitrate

Sodium nitrate is an inorganic salt that functions primarily in oral care formulations. In skincare, it appears in a small percentage of products, where it is used for its soothing properties.The ingredient works by influencing the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway in the body, a biological system involved in vascular and cellular function. When applied topically or ingested, sodium nitrate can be converted into nitric oxide, a signalling molecule with several physiological roles.

Sodium nitrate is converted in the body into nitrite, which is then further metabolised into nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide is a key signalling molecule involved in endothelial function and vascular health.When topically applied in skincare formulations, sodium nitrate may influence local skin physiology through this pathway, potentially supporting blood flow and reducing inflammation. However, the concentration and bioavailability in topical skincare products is considerably lower than in oral applications, which may limit its efficacy in this context.

If using a skincare product containing sodium nitrate, apply as directed by the product instructions. Given that this is a minor ingredient in most formulations, it is best thought of as a supporting component rather than a primary active. Consistency of use is more important than frequency; incorporate it into your regular routine if it suits your skin.

Sodium nitrate is generally well-tolerated in skincare products at typical concentrations. At very high systemic doses, nitrates can cause methemoglobinemia, a serious blood condition, but this is not a concern with topical skincare use.
