What Is Taraxacum Officinale Root Extract?

Taraxacum officinale root extract is derived from the roots of the common dandelion plant. The extract contains bioactive compounds including triterpenes and other phytochemicals that have been the subject of traditional herbal medicine practices for centuries, particularly in Chinese and Native American traditions.

In skincare formulations, this ingredient functions as a skin conditioner, with research suggesting it may offer antioxidant and protective properties to the skin.

How It Works

The root extract contains compounds that appear to work by neutralising free radicals and reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) in skin cells. This antioxidant action may help protect skin from oxidative stress caused by UV exposure and environmental pollution.

Research suggests certain triterpenes in the extract may also support the activity of skin fibroblasts—the cells responsible for producing collagen and maintaining skin structure—though the mechanisms are not yet fully understood.

Clinical Evidence & References

Laboratory studies on dandelion root and related Taraxacum species show promise in protecting skin fibroblasts from UVB-induced damage and reducing markers of photodamage such as matrix metalloproteinase activity. Some research has also examined potential anti-tumour-promoting properties in animal models.

However, most evidence comes from in vitro or animal studies. Human clinical trials on this ingredient in skincare are limited, so efficacy in finished products on living human skin requires further investigation. The evidence is supportive but not conclusive for anti-ageing or photoprotection claims.

How to Use

Taraxacum officinale root extract is typically found in serums, toners, and moisturisers. It can be used as part of a daily skincare routine. For best results, layer it with other proven photoprotective ingredients such as sunscreen, rather than relying on it alone for UV protection.

Safety & Precautions

Generally well-tolerated in skincare formulations. Those with known allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family (including ragweed, chrysanthemums, and daisies) should exercise caution.
