What Is Tea-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate?
Tea-dodecylbenzenesulfonate is a synthetic surfactant — a type of cleansing agent that helps oil and water mix together. It belongs to a class of ingredients called anionic surfactants, which are negatively charged molecules designed to lift dirt, sebum, and other impurities from the skin's surface.
In skincare products, it functions primarily as a cleanser and foaming agent, helping to create the lather and texture associated with face washes, body cleansers, and similar formulations. It appears in roughly 0.2% of skincare products.
How It Works
Tea-dodecylbenzenesulfonate works by surrounding oil particles with its molecular structure, allowing them to be suspended in water and rinsed away. One end of the molecule attracts to oils whilst the other attracts to water, effectively bridging these two immiscible substances.
This mechanism also produces the foaming action commonly associated with cleansers, as the ingredient stabilises tiny air bubbles within the product.
Clinical Evidence & References
As a well-established surfactant used in cleansing formulations, tea-dodecylbenzenesulfonate has a long history of use in personal care products. Research on skin cleansing generally supports the use of mild surfactants in appropriate concentrations to remove surface impurities without compromising the skin barrier.
However, specific clinical studies directly comparing this ingredient to other surfactants are limited. Its safety profile appears consistent with other anionic surfactants used in skincare, though individual tolerance varies depending on product formulation and personal skin sensitivity.
How to Use
Use in rinse-off products as directed — typically once or twice daily depending on your skin type and the product's formulation. Always rinse thoroughly with water after use. If using a cleanser containing this ingredient, follow with a hydrating toner or moisturiser to support skin barrier health, particularly if you have dry or sensitive skin.
