What Is Tea-Laurate?

TEA-Laurate is a surfactant derived from lauric acid (a naturally occurring fatty acid) combined with triethanolamine. It belongs to a class of cleansing agents that reduce surface tension, allowing water and oil-based ingredients to mix effectively.

In skincare formulations, TEA-Laurate primarily works as an emulsifier and foaming agent. It helps bind water and oil together, creating stable, uniform products, and generates a light lather in cleansers. Unlike harsher surfactants, it is considered relatively mild and is commonly used in gentle formulations.

How It Works

TEA-Laurate works by positioning itself between water and oil molecules, with one end attracted to water and the other to oils. This allows it to encapsulate sebum, dirt, and other water-insoluble impurities, suspending them so they can be rinsed away.

In formulations, it stabilises the mixture by preventing separation of oil and water phases, ensuring consistent texture and efficacy throughout the product's shelf life.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research on TEA-Laurate specifically is limited in published literature. However, the broader category of mild surfactants has been established as effective for cleansing without compromising skin barrier integrity—particularly important given that impaired barrier function can lead to sensitivity and delayed healing.

Most evidence for this ingredient comes from safety and tolerance data rather than efficacy studies. It is generally recognised as safe in cosmetic formulations at typical concentrations.

How to Use

TEA-Laurate is typically used in cleansing products (balms, gels, foams) rather than leave-on treatments. Use as directed on the product label—usually once or twice daily during cleansing. Rinse thoroughly with water. As with any cleanser, follow with appropriate toners or serums suited to your skin type.

Safety & Precautions

TEA-Laurate is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for use in cosmetics. Those with sensitivities to surfactants or a compromised skin barrier should patch-test before full application.
