What Is Tea-Stearate?

Tea-stearate is a mild surfactant derived from stearic acid (a naturally occurring fatty acid) and triethanolamine. It belongs to a class of ingredients that can both dissolve in oil and water, making it useful in skincare formulations where oil and water phases need to blend together.

In cleansing products, tea-stearate helps to lift away oils, makeup, and impurities from the skin's surface. Because it is a gentler surfactant compared to many stronger detergents, it is often chosen for products intended for regular or sensitive use.

How It Works

Tea-stearate works by positioning itself at the boundary between oil and water. One end of the molecule is attracted to oils and dirt on the skin, whilst the other end is attracted to water. This allows it to surround oily particles and lift them away, which can then be rinsed off with water.

In formulations, it also helps stabilise products by preventing oil and water from separating, keeping the texture consistent and ensuring even distribution of active ingredients.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research on skin physiology confirms that an intact skin barrier is essential for healthy skin function and that overly harsh cleansing can impair this barrier. Tea-stearate is recognised in cosmetic chemistry as a mild surfactant option; however, direct clinical studies comparing it to other cleansers in skincare are limited.

Its safety and tolerability profile is generally established through decades of use in cosmetic products, though individual responses may vary depending on formulation and skin sensitivity.

How to Use

Tea-stearate is typically found in cleansers, micellar waters, and light emulsifying formulations. Use as directed on the product label—usually as part of a daily cleanse. Because it is mild, it is often suitable for morning and evening use, though those with very sensitive skin should patch-test first.

Safety & Precautions

Tea-stearate is generally well-tolerated and has a long history of safe use in cosmetics. Those with known sensitivity to triethanolamine or stearic acid should avoid products containing this ingredient.
