What Is Tea-Sulfate?

Tea-sulfate (triethanolamine sulfate) is a buffering agent commonly used in skincare formulations. It functions as a pH regulator, helping to neutralise and stabilise the acidity or alkalinity of a product to keep it within a range that suits skin application.

As a buffering ingredient, tea-sulfate works behind the scenes to maintain formula stability rather than delivering a direct benefit to skin. Its presence allows other active ingredients in a formula to remain effective and tolerable when applied to the skin.

How It Works

Tea-sulfate works by accepting or donating hydrogen ions within a skincare formula, which stabilises its pH. This buffering action is important because skin has a naturally acidic pH (around 4.5 to 5.5), and products formulated at extreme pH values can cause irritation or reduce efficacy of active ingredients.

By maintaining a stable pH throughout the product's shelf life, tea-sulfate indirectly supports skin barrier function and allows actives like vitamin C, niacinamide, or acids to work as intended without unnecessary irritation.

Clinical Evidence & References

Limited clinical research directly examines tea-sulfate in isolation. Its role is primarily technical rather than therapeutic. The ingredient has been used safely in cosmetics for decades as a standard formulation stabiliser.

The broader evidence supports the importance of appropriate pH in skincare; products formulated at skin-compatible pH levels show better tolerability and ingredient efficacy. Tea-sulfate's contribution lies in helping formulations achieve and maintain this optimal range.

How to Use

Tea-sulfate is a formulation ingredient and requires no specific usage guidance on the consumer end. Simply use your product as directed. If you notice any irritation when using a product containing this ingredient, discontinue and patch test on a small area first before reintroducing.

Safety & Precautions

Tea-sulfate is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for skincare use. It is primarily a formulation tool and rarely a source of skin irritation at typical concentrations.
