What Is Tea Tree Leaf Oil?
Tea tree oil is distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a tree native to Australia. Indigenous Australians have used tea tree for its medicinal properties for thousands of years.
The oil contains terpinen-4-ol and other compounds with powerful antimicrobial properties. It is particularly effective against Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria that contributes to acne.
Studies have shown tea tree oil can be as effective as benzoyl peroxide for treating mild to moderate acne, with less irritation.
