Terpineol

Terpineol is a naturally occurring alcohol found in essential oils such as pine, lilac, and tea tree. In skincare products, it is used in a synthetic or derived form as a fragrance ingredient and odour masking agent.Its primary function is cosmetic rather than therapeutic. It contributes to the scent profile of a product and can help to neutralise or mask less pleasant smells from other active ingredients or preservatives.

Terpineol works by chemically interacting with odorous compounds, either by binding to them or by introducing a competing scent that masks underlying smells. This is a sensory function rather than a mechanism that directly alters skin physiology.

Terpineol is present in very small amounts in most skincare products (typically below 1%). There is no need for specific application guidance; it works passively within the formulation.

Terpineol is generally well-tolerated at the concentrations used in skincare. It is listed as a potential EU allergen; individuals with fragrance sensitivity or known terpene sensitivity should check ingredient lists and perform a patch test if concerned.
