Tetrasodium Etidronate

Tetrasodium etidronate is a synthetic chelating agent derived from ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonic acid. In skincare formulations, it works by binding to metal ions (such as calcium, magnesium, and iron) that might otherwise destabilise the product or interfere with its texture and performance.It serves a primarily functional role rather than a direct skin-benefit role. By keeping unwanted minerals in suspension, it helps maintain product consistency, prevents separation, and protects active ingredients from degradation caused by mineral contamination.

Tetrasodium etidronate functions as a chelator by surrounding metal ions with chemical bonds, essentially trapping them so they cannot participate in unwanted reactions. Hard water minerals and trace metals introduced during manufacturing or storage can otherwise catalyse oxidation and cause emulsions to break down.By stabilising these ions in the formulation, the ingredient indirectly protects the stability and longevity of the product you apply to your skin, rather than delivering a direct topical benefit.

There is no special usage guidance required for tetrasodium etidronate, as it functions behind the scenes within the formulation. Simply use the product as directed by the manufacturer. It is neither activated by nor dependent on application frequency, water type, or skincare routine modifications.

Tetrasodium etidronate is considered safe in the cosmetic concentrations used (typically well below 1%). It is not known to be a skin irritant or sensitiser, and is suitable for use across all skin types including sensitive skin.
