What Is Velvet Extract?

Velvet extract is derived from deer antler velvet, a tissue that has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, particularly in East Asian practices. The extract contains bioactive proteins and growth factors that are obtained through extraction processes designed to preserve these delicate compounds.

In skincare formulations, velvet extract functions primarily as a humectant and skin conditioning agent. It works to support the skin's moisture retention and overall condition, though it remains relatively uncommon in cosmetic products—appearing in roughly 0.1% of skincare offerings.

How It Works

Velvet extract contains bioactive proteins and growth factors that interact with skin cells to encourage cell proliferation and activity. These compounds appear to work at a cellular level, potentially stimulating dermal papilla cells and supporting the skin's natural renewal processes.

Research suggests the extract may also enhance antioxidant defence mechanisms within the skin, helping to counteract oxidative stress. When delivered effectively through appropriate formulation vehicles, these bioactive components can reach deeper layers of the skin to exert their conditioning effects.

Clinical Evidence & References

In-vitro studies show that velvet extract at higher concentrations (2,000 µg/ml) significantly enhanced cell proliferation and aggregation in human dermal cells. Research combining velvet extract with red ginseng demonstrated protective effects against UVB-induced damage in both cell cultures and animal models, suggesting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential.

However, evidence in human skin remains limited. Most research has focused on concentrated extracts or combination formulations rather than velvet extract alone at typical cosmetic concentrations. Real-world efficacy at the low levels used in consumer skincare products requires further investigation.

How to Use

Velvet extract is typically incorporated into serums, creams, and targeted treatments. Use as directed by the product instructions, usually once or twice daily. Because the extract works best when delivered effectively to the skin, formulations using advanced delivery systems (such as microspicules or nanovesicles) may offer improved results compared to simpler formulations.

Safety & Precautions

Velvet extract is generally considered well-tolerated in skincare products. Those with sensitivities to animal-derived ingredients should check product labelling carefully.
