What Is Wine Extract?

Wine extract is derived from the grape vine plant and contains polyphenols—naturally occurring antioxidant compounds also found in foods like green tea, chocolate, and grape seeds. In skincare, it functions primarily as an antioxidant, helping to neutralise free radicals that can damage skin cells.

The extract is used in a small proportion of skincare formulations, typically at low concentrations. Wine lees (the sediment left after fermentation) are a particularly sustainable source, and studies have identified ceramides and glucosylceramides within this material, which may support skin barrier function.

Benefits for Your Skin

How It Works

Wine extract works by providing antioxidants that neutralise free radicals—unstable molecules generated by sun exposure, pollution, and natural metabolic processes. By reducing oxidative stress, these polyphenols help protect skin cells from damage and premature ageing.

The ceramides and glucosylceramides within wine lees extract support the skin barrier by helping to retain moisture and strengthen the protective lipid layer. This is particularly relevant for people with compromised or sensitive barriers, though evidence is strongest for oral supplementation at present.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research suggests that polyphenols from wine and grape sources possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potentially photoprotective properties. A review of sunburn prevention found 15 studies meeting inclusion criteria, with evidence that polyphenols—both topical and oral—may reduce UV-induced skin damage, though the body of human data remains modest.

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 29 healthy participants examined wine lees extract-derived ceramides and glucosylceramides taken orally over 12 weeks. Results suggested benefits for skin barrier function as measured by transepidermal water loss, skin hydration, and self-reported itching. However, more topical application studies in larger populations would strengthen the evidence base for skincare use specifically.

How to Use

Wine extract is typically found in serums, moisturisers, and treatments at low concentrations. It integrates well into antioxidant-focused routines and pairs particularly well with other barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. Use consistently as part of your daily skincare regimen for the most reliable benefit.

Safety & Precautions

Wine extract is generally well-tolerated in skincare products. Those with known sensitivities to wine or grape-derived ingredients should patch test first.
