What Is Yeast Polysaccharides?
Yeast polysaccharides are carbohydrate compounds derived from yeast, often sourced as a byproduct of fermentation processes. In skincare, they function as film-forming agents that create a protective layer on the skin's surface whilst also acting as humectants to help retain moisture.
These ingredients are valued for their dual role: they condition the skin by improving texture and suppleness, whilst simultaneously supporting the skin's natural protective functions. The polysaccharide structure allows them to work at the surface level without penetrating deeply into the dermis.
How It Works
Yeast polysaccharides work through two primary mechanisms. First, they form a thin, breathable film on the skin's surface, similar to a veil that shields against irritants and moisture loss. Second, their humectant properties allow them to bind water molecules and draw them towards the epidermis, supporting hydration from within the stratum corneum.
The polysaccharide structure is also thought to interact with the skin's natural protective lipids, potentially strengthening barrier function at a chemical level, though research in this area remains ongoing.

Research on yeast-derived compounds suggests they possess antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, largely attributed to bioactive compounds produced during fermentation such as vitamins and amino acids. However, most existing studies focus on kombucha (a fermented beverage) or yeast peptides for food applications, rather than cosmetic yeast polysaccharides specifically.
Whilst spent yeast waste streams have shown promise as a source of skin-conditioning peptides with potential immunomodulatory effects, dedicated clinical trials on yeast polysaccharides as a cosmetic ingredient are limited. Current evidence supports their safety and hypoallergenic profile, but claims regarding efficacy should be viewed as preliminary pending further research.

Yeast polysaccharides are typically found in serums, moisturisers and protective creams. They work well in layered routines and pair effectively with other hydrating or barrier-supporting ingredients. Apply to damp skin to maximise their hydrating effect, or use in the latter steps of your routine to seal in previous products.
