Zein

Zein is a prolamine protein derived from corn. It functions primarily as a film-forming agent, meaning it creates a thin, continuous layer on the surface of skin or hair. This characteristic makes it useful in both skincare and haircare formulations, where it serves conditioning and protective roles.As a plant-derived ingredient, zein has been used in cosmetics for several decades. Its film-forming properties distinguish it from humectants and emollients, offering a different type of benefit focused on creating a protective barrier rather than delivering hydration directly into the skin.

Zein works by depositing a thin protective film across the skin or hair surface. This film acts as a semi-permeable barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss whilst allowing the skin to breathe. Unlike heavy occlusive oils, the film formed by zein is relatively lightweight and less likely to feel sticky or uncomfortable.The protein's molecular structure allows it to adhere to the skin and create a cohesive layer that persists through normal daily activity, though it will gradually diminish with cleansing and over time.

Zein is typically incorporated into formulations by manufacturers rather than used as a standalone treatment. When present in serums, lotions or other products, apply as directed on the product label. It works well in layered routines and pairs effectively with hydrating and nourishing ingredients, allowing those products to absorb before the zein-containing formula is applied to seal the skin.
