What Is Zeolite?
Zeolite is a microporous, naturally occurring aluminosilicate mineral with a crystalline structure that resembles a honeycomb. This framework creates tiny channels and cavities throughout the material, giving it exceptional absorbent properties. In skincare, zeolite is used primarily for its ability to absorb water, oils and other substances.
The ingredient functions as an absorbent and anticaking agent in cosmetic formulations. It is relatively uncommon in skincare products, appearing in approximately 0.2% of formulations globally, and is typically used in powders, masks and oil-control products where its moisture and oil-absorbing capacity is beneficial.
How It Works
Zeolite's porous structure acts like a microscopic sponge. When incorporated into a skincare formulation, these tiny pores trap and hold water molecules and oil, effectively removing excess moisture and sebum from the product itself or from the skin's surface. This physical absorption mechanism does not involve any chemical reaction—the substance is simply held within the mineral's framework.
The size and shape of zeolite's pores mean it can selectively absorb certain molecules whilst leaving others untouched, which contributes to its utility in formulation design.

Research into zeolite's potential in skincare remains limited. Some studies have explored zeolite as a carrier or encapsulant for other active ingredients—for example, encapsulating titanium dioxide within zeolite structures to alter its photocatalytic properties. However, direct evidence of zeolite's standalone benefits when applied topically to human skin is sparse.
The ingredient's absorbent properties are well-established in industrial and pharmaceutical contexts, but clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy in cosmetic skincare products are not widely available in the literature. Current use is primarily based on its proven physical absorption capabilities rather than robust dermatological evidence.
How to Use
Zeolite is typically found in powder formulations, oil-control masks and mattifying products. When used in these formats, allow powders to settle on the skin for a few moments before blending to allow the absorbent properties to work effectively. Because zeolite functions through physical absorption rather than chemical action, it can be layered with other skincare ingredients without concern for interactions.
