What Is Zeatin?
Zeatin is a naturally occurring plant growth factor (cytokinin) derived from maize. In skincare, it functions as a skin conditioning agent, working at the cellular level to support skin hydration and resilience.
The ingredient appears to exert its effects by influencing cellular signalling pathways that are disrupted by sun exposure. Research has focused primarily on its trans form, which is considered more stable and bioactive than other variants.
How It Works
Zeatin influences cellular signalling pathways, particularly the MEK/ERK pathway, which is activated by UV exposure. By modulating this pathway, it may help prevent the UV-triggered downregulation of aquaporin-3—a protein responsible for water transport across cell membranes. This could help skin maintain its water content more effectively.
Additionally, research suggests zeatin may inhibit the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), an enzyme that breaks down collagen and other structural proteins in the skin. By limiting UV-induced MMP-1 activation, it may help preserve the extracellular matrix.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory studies indicate that zeatin can attenuate UV-induced damage to keratinocytes and fibroblasts—the two primary cell types in skin. When skin cells were pretreated with zeatin, they showed reduced UV-triggered loss of aquaporin-3 and suppressed MMP-1 expression compared to untreated controls.
In vitro studies of aged fibroblasts showed that zeatin treatment appeared to extend cellular lifespan and preserve youthful characteristics, with an optimal concentration identified around 80 microM. However, these are laboratory findings; evidence from human clinical trials remains limited, and the concentrations used in research may not directly translate to typical skincare formulations.

How to Use
Zeatin is typically incorporated into serums, moisturisers, and targeted treatments. It works well in layered routines and can be combined with other hydrating or antioxidant ingredients. No special application technique is required; simply apply to clean skin as directed on the product label.
