Obagi for Acne-Prone Skin: The Full Range Reviewed

5 min read Updated Aug 20, 2026

Two products carry most of Obagi's acne-prone-skin work: a salicylic acid cleanser from the dedicated CLENZIderm M.D. range, and a stronger exfoliating lotion from the Nu-Derm system for oilier, more congested skin. A BHA toner and a gel cleanser sit alongside them as a companion step and a gentler alternative. None of these are marketed as an acne cure — they're formulated to help improve the appearance of congestion, blackheads and oiliness as part of a wider routine, not to treat or reverse active breakouts on their own.

Obagi doesn't sell one dedicated "acne kit". Instead the acne-prone-skin job is split across CLENZIderm M.D., built around salicylic acid, and Nu-Derm, the brand's broader system, which includes an exfoliating lotion strong enough to suit oilier and more congested skin. Below is what each of the four products does, who it suits, and where the gentler alternative sits if the lead pick feels like too much.

Why acne-prone skin needs a cleanser and an exfoliant, not just one product

Congested, blemish-prone skin is usually dealing with two jobs at once — oil and debris sitting on the surface, and dead skin cells building up inside the pore. A cleanser addresses the first; a BHA exfoliant, whether that's a toner or a leave-on lotion, addresses the second. Obagi splits these jobs across the CLENZIderm and Nu-Derm ranges rather than combining them into one product, which is why most routines built from this brand end up using two products together rather than just one.

The lead pick: a dedicated salicylic acid cleanser

Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Foaming Cleanser

A 2% salicylic acid foaming cleanser formulated for acne-prone, congested, oily and normal skin. It's the most straightforward starting point in Obagi's acne-prone-skin line-up — a daily-use cleanser rather than a leave-on treatment, so it's a lower-commitment way to introduce salicylic acid into a routine than an exfoliating lotion or toner. Pair it with the CLENZIderm Pore Therapy BHA toner below for the full two-step CLENZIderm routine, or use it alone if you'd rather keep things simple.

For oilier, more congested skin: a stronger exfoliating lotion

Obagi Nu-Derm Exfoderm Forte

Exfoderm Forte is an advanced-strength exfoliating lotion built around glycolic acid, phytic acid and emu oil, sold as part of Obagi's Nu-Derm system but available to buy on its own. It's a leave-on treatment rather than a cleanser, aimed at oilier, congested or sun-damaged skin that wants a stronger chemical exfoliant than a standard toner provides. Because it's the "Forte" step-up formula, it isn't the place to start if you're new to chemical exfoliation — Obagi also sells a standard-strength Nu-Derm Exfoderm for dry or exfoliant-naive skin, which sits outside this acne-focused round-up but is worth knowing about if Forte feels like too much too soon.

The companion toner

Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Pore Therapy BHA Toner

A 2% salicylic acid liquid toner designed to follow the CLENZIderm Foaming Cleanser as the second step in the range's acne-prone routine. It's positioned as a companion product rather than a standalone pick — most people reach for it once they already know their skin tolerates salicylic acid from the cleanser, rather than starting here. Skip it if you're already using another BHA or salicylic acid product daily, to avoid over-exfoliating.

The gentler alternative cleanser

Obagi Nu-Derm Foaming Gel Cleanser

A gel cleanser built around aloe vera and alfalfa extract rather than salicylic acid, formulated for oily, combination, congested and acne-prone skin that wants a gentle daily cleanse without an active ingredient. It's the alternative to reach for if the CLENZIderm Foaming Cleanser feels too drying, or if you're already getting salicylic acid from the Pore Therapy toner or Exfoderm Forte and don't need it doubled up in the cleanse step too.

Building a routine around these four products

The simplest way in is one product: the CLENZIderm M.D. Foaming Cleanser on its own, used morning and evening in place of your current cleanser. If your skin tolerates salicylic acid well after a few weeks, the Pore Therapy toner can be added as a second step. Exfoderm Forte is a separate, stronger addition best introduced on its own once your skin is used to salicylic acid, rather than layered in at the same time as a new cleanser and toner — introducing several actives at once makes it hard to tell what's causing any change.

If salicylic acid isn't right for your skin, or you want a break from it, the Nu-Derm Foaming Gel Cleanser is the swap-in: it keeps you in the same care routine without the active ingredient. Whichever combination you land on, patch test any new product first, and keep a simple moisturiser and SPF in the routine alongside these — congested skin still needs hydration and sun protection, not just exfoliation.
