Exuviance HydraPrep vs HydraSoothe Toner: Which Should You Choose?
Updated Aug 20, 2026
The Verdict
HydraPrep and HydraSoothe aren't a strong-vs-weak version of the same toner — they're built for different skin. HydraPrep adds Glycolic Acid to its Gluconolactone base, plus Alcohol Denat. and fragrance, for normal-to-combination skin that's already comfortable with mild AHA exfoliation and wants a toner that does more than rebalance pH. HydraSoothe strips all of that back to Gluconolactone and Sodium Hyaluronate alone, alcohol-free, for dry, delicate or reactive skin that needs the hydrating, pH-rebalancing step without any added exfoliation or irritation risk. If you're unsure which fits your skin, start with HydraSoothe and step up to HydraPrep only once your skin has shown it tolerates acids well.
Exuviance sells two toners that do the same basic job — rebalance skin pH and add hydration straight after cleansing — but they're built from genuinely different formulas, not just different strengths of the same one. HydraPrep pH Balance Toner combines Glycolic Acid with Gluconolactone for normal-to-combination skin; HydraSoothe Refresh Toner drops the AHA and the alcohol entirely for a gentler, PHA-only formula aimed at sensitive and delicate skin.

The core difference: AHA + PHA blend vs PHA only
Both toners lean on Gluconolactone, a Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) that Exuviance uses across much of its range for its comparatively gentle, moisture-binding exfoliation. HydraSoothe stops there — Gluconolactone is the only exfoliating acid in the formula. HydraPrep goes a step further and adds Glycolic Acid, a small-molecule AHA that works faster and more assertively at the skin's surface.
That single addition changes what each toner is actually doing. HydraSoothe is a hydrating, pH-rebalancing step with mild PHA support. HydraPrep is closer to a light daily exfoliating treatment that also rebalances pH and hydrates — genuinely more active, not just marketed that way.
Alcohol, fragrance and colourants: the other formulation gap
The acid blend isn't the only thing separating these two. HydraPrep's ingredients list also includes Alcohol Denat., Parfum (fragrance), and two synthetic colourants — Blue 1 and Yellow 5. HydraSoothe is formulated without alcohol, which is one of the main reasons Exuviance positions it for delicate and reactive skin: alcohol denat. can be drying or sensitising for some skin types, on top of whatever the acid itself does. Fragrance status for HydraSoothe specifically wasn't confirmed in the product data available to us — if that's a hard requirement for you, check the ingredients panel on the product page or contact our team before buying.
Who each toner suits
HydraPrep is Exuviance's pick for normal-to-combination skin that's already comfortable with mild AHA use and wants pH-balancing, exfoliation and hydration handled in a single step rather than three separate products. It suits people building a routine around visible texture or dullness who don't need to go as far as a dedicated AHA serum.
HydraSoothe is built for the opposite end of the spectrum: dry, delicate, sensitive or reactive skin, including skin that's previously reacted to alcohol-based or stronger acid toners, plus mature skin wanting a gentle, non-irritating prep step. It's also a sensible entry point if you're new to acid toners altogether and want to see how your skin responds to Gluconolactone before introducing an AHA. For a wider view of what else suits reactive skin, see our best products for sensitive skin guide.
Sun sensitivity and safety
Because HydraPrep contains Glycolic Acid, it carries the sun-sensitivity caveat that comes with any AHA product — Exuviance's own guidance calls for daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ while using it, and for a week after stopping. HydraSoothe's PHA-only formula doesn't carry an equivalent AHA-specific warning in the data available to us, though daily SPF is sound practice regardless of which toner you use, given the other actives likely in your routine.
Both formulas include chamomile, so anyone with a known plant or pollen sensitivity (the Asteraceae family) should patch test either product before applying to the face. Exuviance advises against using either toner on broken, irritated or sunburnt skin, and to stop if redness or irritation persists.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, please contact our team for advice before use.
How to use — and can you switch between them?
Both toners follow the same routine placement: apply twice daily, morning and evening, immediately after cleansing and before serum or moisturiser, using a moistened cotton pad or patted in with clean hands. Neither is rinsed off — let it absorb before layering the next step.
Switching from HydraSoothe up to HydraPrep is the more natural direction once your skin has shown it tolerates PHA well and you want more active exfoliation; ease in with once-daily use before moving to twice daily, as you would with any new AHA product. Moving the other way — from HydraPrep down to HydraSoothe — makes sense if your skin starts reacting to the alcohol or the added acid strength, or during periods when you want to dial back actives, such as alongside a new retinoid or in-clinic treatment.
Price and where to buy
Current pricing for both toners wasn't independently confirmed for this comparison — check live pricing on each product's own page before buying: HydraPrep pH Balance Toner and HydraSoothe Refresh Toner. Both are sold in the same 200ml size, so you're not paying a size premium either way.
Which should you choose?
- Choose HydraPrep pH Balance Toner if your skin is normal-to-combination, you're already comfortable with mild AHA use, and you want pH-balancing, exfoliation and hydration in one step.
- Choose HydraSoothe Refresh Toner if your skin is dry, delicate, sensitive or reactive, or you're new to acid toners and want an alcohol-free, PHA-only starting point.
- If you're not sure which describes your skin, start with HydraSoothe and step up to HydraPrep only once you know how your skin responds to daily acid use.
