NeoStrata Bionic Face Serum vs Bionic Lotion: Which PHA Product Do You Need?
Updated Aug 20, 2026
The Verdict
Not a straight rivalry: Bionic Face Serum is a concentrated 10% Lactobionic Acid treatment step, Bionic Lotion is a 15% PHA moisturiser. Dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin often benefits from layering both rather than choosing one.
NeoStrata Bionic Face Serum and Bionic Lotion both use the brand's Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) technology, but they're not interchangeable. The Face Serum is a concentrated 10% Lactobionic Acid treatment step; the Lotion is a lighter 15% total PHA moisturiser (12% Gluconolactone plus 3% Lactobionic Acid) for daily hydration. Most people with dry, sensitive, or reactive skin end up using both, in different steps of the same routine.

What they have in common
Both formulas are fragrance-free and built around NeoStrata's PHA technology rather than classic AHAs like glycolic acid. PHA molecules are larger than AHA molecules, so they exfoliate more gradually and sit closer to the skin's surface — generally meaning a gentler experience with less risk of stinging or heightened sun sensitivity. Both products are formulated to support the skin's moisture barrier while helping improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, and dullness over consistent daily use. Neither is designed as a fast-acting resurfacing treatment; both prioritise comfort and tolerability, which is the whole point of the Bionic range.
Where they differ
The Face Serum is the more concentrated, single-active formula — 10% Lactobionic Acid on its own, plus antioxidant Pro-Vitamins A, C and E — designed to sit as a treatment layer directly on cleansed skin before moisturiser. The Lotion spreads its PHA content across two acids (Gluconolactone and Lactobionic Acid) at a higher combined 15%, but in a lighter, more moisturising base intended to replace or supplement a standard moisturiser rather than sit underneath one. In practice, the Serum reads as the treatment step and the Lotion reads as the hydration step, even though both are PHA-based.
The Lotion also carries a claim the Serum doesn't: NeoStrata's own product information states its Bionic Acid formulation has been shown, in the brand's own testing, to improve dryness, redness and flaking associated with eczema. This is NeoStrata's claim rather than an independently verified clinical finding we can stand behind, and we haven't been able to source the underlying study details. If you have diagnosed eczema, psoriasis, or another ongoing skin condition, please speak to your GP or dermatologist before adding either product to your routine.
Which one do you need?
- Want a treatment step under your usual moisturiser — the Face Serum is built for this.
- Want to replace a heavier moisturiser with something lighter — the Lotion is designed as a standalone moisturising step.
- Very dry, eczema-prone, or extremely reactive skin — the Lotion's higher total PHA concentration and moisturising base is the more likely starting point, alongside medical advice if you have a diagnosed condition.
- Post-procedure skin needing comfort without heaviness — either can suit; NeoStrata positions both for this use, so texture preference usually decides it.
- Want fuller PHA benefits without doubling up on strength — most people use both: Serum as the treatment layer, Lotion as the moisturiser on top.
Can you use both together?
Yes — this is how NeoStrata designs the Bionic range to be used, and it's the most common way Skintique customers combine the two. Apply the Face Serum to cleansed, dry skin first, then follow with the Lotion as your moisturising step. Because both are PHA-based rather than stacking a PHA with a stronger AHA or retinoid, the combined routine stays within the same gentle-exfoliation profile rather than compounding irritation risk. As with any new acid routine, patch test first and consider introducing the pairing gradually — for example, using the Lotion daily but the Serum on alternate days initially — if your skin is particularly reactive. Daily SPF remains essential whenever a PHA is part of your routine, whichever product or combination you use.

The Skintique Academy verdict
This isn't really a head-to-head — the Face Serum and Lotion are built to do different jobs within the same gentle PHA philosophy. The Serum is our Tier A pick for a genuinely effective, comfort-first daily treatment; the Lotion is a solid Tier B moisturiser for dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin, with the caveat that its eczema claim comes from NeoStrata's own testing rather than independent evidence. If you only want one product, match it to the job: treatment step or moisturising step. If your skin is dry, sensitive, or reactive enough to need both, layering them together is exactly how the range is designed to work.
