Heliocare vs traditional sunscreens: what's actually different

Most sunscreen does one job: it sits on your skin and blocks UV. Heliocare takes a broader approach, working both on the surface and, with its oral range, from within. That sounds like marketing until you look at what's in it.

What makes Heliocare, Heliocare

The active it's built around is Fernblock, an extract from a tropical fern, Polypodium leucotomos, studied for its antioxidant behaviour and its ability to help skin cope with UV stress. Heliocare's flagship line, Heliocare 360, layers several things together: broad-spectrum UV filters at SPF 50+, Fernblock, defence that extends to visible light and infrared rather than just UV, and support for the skin's own repair processes.

That visible-light point matters more than it sounds. Standard SPF numbers only describe UVB protection, yet a good deal of pigmentation is driven by light a normal sunscreen doesn't even acknowledge.

Where the two approaches part ways

  • UVB – covered by both traditional SPF and Heliocare 360
  • UVA – varies by traditional product; full-spectrum in Heliocare 360
  • Visible light – not addressed by most traditional SPF; covered by Heliocare 360
  • Infrared – not addressed by most traditional SPF; covered by Heliocare 360
  • Antioxidant support – not typical of traditional SPF; built in via Fernblock

There's also a difference in how you use it. Traditional sunscreen is topical only, reapplied roughly every two hours. Heliocare offers topical products plus oral capsules, so you can build protection from two directions at once.

The Heliocare range, briefly

On the topical side: 360 Gel Oil-Free suits oily or combination skin; 360 Water Gel is light and hydrating under make-up; 360 Color Gel Oil-Free is tinted with a little coverage built in; 360 Mineral uses physical filters only for sensitive skin; and 360 Pigment Solution is formulated with pigmentation-prone skin in mind. On the capsule side, Ultra-D is a daily Fernblock supplement with added vitamin D, and Ultra is a higher dose for stretches of stronger sun exposure.

When Heliocare earns its place

It isn't for everyone, and that's fine. It comes into its own if you have a history of sun damage or skin cancer, deal with melasma or other stubborn pigmentation, need protection after a peel, laser or similar treatment, spend real time in strong sun on holiday or through work, or have fair skin that burns easily.

When ordinary SPF is genuinely enough

For a lot of people, a solid everyday sunscreen does the job. If your days are mostly indoors, sun exposure is limited, and you've no particular history of pigmentation or sensitivity, there's no need to overthink it. A good SPF worn consistently beats a fancy one worn now and then. Our guide to broad-spectrum facial sunscreen is a good place to compare everyday options.

The bit about oral protection

This is the part people are sceptical about, and reasonably so. What research into Polypodium leucotomos extract has looked at is fairly specific: studies have reported that it may help reduce UV-triggered redness, that it appears to lower certain markers of UV-related cellular stress, and that it provides antioxidant support while you're exposed. Useful findings, but not a substitute. Oral supplements support your sunscreen; they don't replace it. Topical protection comes first, always, and the capsule is the backup, not the star.

So which should you buy?

For most everyday situations, a good traditional sunscreen is perfectly adequate. Wear it, reapply it, and you're covered. Heliocare is the step up for people who need more – a history of skin cancer, tricky pigmentation, high sun exposure, or recovery after a treatment. In those cases, the wider spectrum and the topical-plus-oral combination offer defence that standard products can't match. If you're in that group, the sensible starting point is a Heliocare 360 topical every single day, with the oral capsules added through summer or whenever pigmentation is your main concern. If uneven tone is the priority, our guide to hyperpigmentation products covers the wider options.

Frequently asked questions

Is Heliocare better than a normal sunscreen?

Not necessarily "better" for everyone. Heliocare adds defence against visible light and infrared, plus Fernblock's antioxidant support, which makes it a strong option for higher-risk skin, but a good everyday SPF is genuinely enough for most people.

Do Heliocare capsules replace sunscreen?

No. The capsules are designed to support topical sun protection, not stand in for it. Always apply a sunscreen alongside them.

Who benefits most from switching to Heliocare?

People with a history of sun damage or skin cancer, melasma or stubborn pigmentation, high sun exposure, fair skin that burns easily, or those recovering from a peel, laser or similar treatment.

What is Fernblock?

Fernblock is an antioxidant extract from the fern Polypodium leucotomos, included in every Heliocare product to help skin cope with UV-related stress alongside the sunscreen filters.
