How to Layer Your Skincare: The Correct Order

You can own great products and still get lukewarm results if you apply them in the wrong order. Layering skincare correctly means each step can actually do its job — and the rule behind it is simpler than the internet makes it sound. Here's the order that works and why.

The simple rule: thinnest to thickest

The core principle is to apply products from lightest, most watery texture to richest. Thin, water-based formulas need to reach the skin first; heavier creams and oils would block them if applied underneath. Get that idea and you can order almost any routine without memorising a list.

The correct order, step by step

  1. Cleanser — start with clean skin.
  2. Watery treatments — a hydrating toner or essence, if you use one.
  3. Water-based serums — lightweight actives like vitamin C, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid.
  4. Retinoids or other treatments (evening) — after lightweight serums, before heavier creams.
  5. Moisturiser — seals in the steps beneath and adds barrier support.
  6. Sunscreen (morning) — always the last skincare step of your day routine.

At night, a facial oil or occlusive goes last of all, on top of moisturiser, because nothing gets through them. For the routines these steps build into, see the basic skincare routine and minimalist skincare.

A few myths worth dropping

  • You don't need to wait ten minutes between every step. A short pause helps SPF and some actives settle, but long waits aren't necessary for most products.
  • More layers isn't better. A handful of well-chosen steps beats ten competing ones — and reduces the risk of pilling and irritation.
  • Actives don't all "cancel out". Most pairings are fine; when in doubt, simply use one in the morning and another at night.

Morning vs evening

A useful shorthand: morning is protection (antioxidant serum, moisturiser, SPF) and evening is repair (treatments like retinoids, richer moisturiser). You don't need to use everything twice a day — split your actives across the two rather than stacking them all at once.

Layering Skincare FAQs

What order should I apply skincare?

Cleanser, then watery treatments, then water-based serums, then any retinoid or treatment, then moisturiser, and sunscreen last in the morning. The rule of thumb is thinnest texture to thickest.

Do I need to wait between skincare steps?

Not much. A short pause helps sunscreen and some actives settle, but the long waiting times you see online aren't necessary for most products. Applying to slightly damp skin actually helps humectants work.

Does serum go before or after moisturiser?

Before. Serums are lighter and more concentrated, so they go on first to reach the skin; moisturiser then seals them in. Applying serum over moisturiser means it can't get through.

What goes on last in a skincare routine?

In the morning, sunscreen is always last. In the evening, moisturiser is usually last — unless you finish with a facial oil or occlusive, which sits on top of everything.

Can I layer too many products?

Yes. Too many competing layers can pill, irritate and stop each other working. A simple, well-ordered routine of a few products almost always outperforms a long one.
