What Is Benzophenone-1?

Benzophenone-1 is a synthetic organic compound belonging to the benzophenone family of UV filters. It functions as a UV absorber, meaning it captures ultraviolet radiation and converts it into heat, thereby reducing the amount of UV energy that penetrates the skin. It is found in roughly 0.3% of skincare products, often used as a stabiliser to prevent photodegradation of other ingredients.

As a UV filter, benzophenone-1 works across a broad spectrum of UV wavelengths. It is also a metabolite of benzophenone-3 (BP-3), another commonly used UV filter, which means it can be produced in the body when BP-3 breaks down.

How It Works

Benzophenone-1 works by absorbing UV radiation across a broad wavelength range. Once it absorbs this energy, it transforms it into harmless heat, preventing the UV rays from reaching deeper layers of the skin and causing DNA damage, inflammation, or accelerated skin ageing.

When used as a stabiliser rather than a primary active, it protects the efficacy of other ingredients in the formula by absorbing light energy that might otherwise degrade them.

Clinical Evidence & References

Biomonitoring studies have detected benzophenone-1 in human biological samples, indicating that UV filters from this family can be absorbed through the skin and distributed throughout the body. Research shows that benzophenones undergo metabolic transformation in the body through processes such as glucuronidation and sulfation.

Whilst benzophenone-1 is registered as a UV filter in cosmetics regulations across several jurisdictions, ongoing evaluation of the benzophenone family continues, particularly regarding potential endocrine effects. Current regulatory oversight suggests it is considered safe at permitted concentrations, though further research into long-term human exposure is ongoing.

How to Use

Benzophenone-1 is typically found at low concentrations in formulated products where it works alongside other ingredients rather than as a standalone active. Follow the usage instructions on your specific product; as with all sun protection products, consistent application and reapplication after water exposure or prolonged sun exposure is important for optimal protection.

Safety & Precautions

Benzophenone-1 is approved for use in cosmetics at regulated concentrations. Research indicates it can penetrate the skin barrier and accumulate in the body; regulatory agencies continue to monitor safety data, particularly concerning potential endocrine effects.
