Benzophenone-4 is a synthetic organic compound used as a UV absorber in skincare products. It belongs to the benzophenone family of UV filters, which work by absorbing ultraviolet radiation and converting it into heat that dissipates from the skin.This ingredient is classified as a chemical (or organic) UV filter, meaning it works through absorption rather than creating a physical barrier on the skin's surface. It appears in approximately 0.6% of skincare formulations, typically used in sun protection products and daily moisturisers.

Benzophenone-4 operates as a chemical UV filter by absorbing ultraviolet photons. When UV light strikes the skin, this ingredient captures that radiation and converts it into thermal energy (heat), which is then released harmlessly from the skin surface.Unlike physical blockers that sit on the skin, chemical filters need to be absorbed into the skin's outer layers to work effectively. This is why they typically require a 15-minute wait time after application before sun exposure.

Apply benzophenone-4 containing products as directed, usually 15 minutes before sun exposure to allow adequate absorption. Use in conjunction with other sun protection measures such as protective clothing and shade-seeking behaviour, particularly during peak UV hours. Reapply after swimming or sweating, as with all sunscreens.
