What Is Betula Alba (Birch) Juice?
Betula alba (birch) juice is a hydrating skin care ingredient derived from the Betula alba birch tree. It’s also commonly referred to as birch juice. Unlike maple or most other types of sap, birch juice is clear and doesn’t have much flavor, it’s just slightly sweet. The juice is a good source of trace minerals like manganese as well as various amino acids, all of which make it a good natural hydrator for skin--but more research is needed before we have a complete understanding of how the various nutrients in birch juice benefit skin (or when the juice is consumed, as birch sap has seemingly replaced coconut water as the new must-have super-drink).
How It Works
Betula alba juice appears to work by activating genes responsible for maintaining the skin barrier. Notably, research suggests it can upregulate AQP3 and occludin—proteins essential for barrier function and cell-to-cell communication—in a way that differs from some synthetic alternatives.
The ingredient also inhibits enzymes (KLK5 and hyaluronidase) that can compromise barrier integrity, whilst simultaneously suppressing inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways through mechanisms including COX2 inhibition.
Clinical Evidence & References
A biochemical study identified betula alba as one of two Nordic plant extracts with notable skin barrier benefits. Laboratory analysis showed it upregulated barrier-related genes both independently and when combined with another plant extract, with effects that exceeded those of niacinamide in some measures.
The research also demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro. However, full clinical trial data on human skin remains limited, so results from laboratory studies should be interpreted as preliminary evidence of potential rather than confirmed efficacy in real-world use.

How to Use
Betula alba juice is typically found in toners, essences, and treatment serums. Apply to clean skin using a cotton pad or by patting into the skin with fingertips. It can be used as part of a morning or evening routine, and may be layered with other skincare products. Start with regular use and adjust frequency based on your skin's response.
