What Is Butylene Glycol Stearate?

Butylene Glycol Stearate is a synthetic compound derived from butylene glycol (a humectant) combined with stearic acid (a fatty acid). It functions as an emulsifier—a molecule with both water-loving and oil-loving properties—which allows it to blend oil and water-based ingredients together in formulations.

Beyond its emulsifying role, it also acts as an emollient and skin conditioning agent, helping to soften and smooth the skin's surface.

How It Works

Butylene Glycol Stearate works by positioning itself at the boundary between oil and water phases in a formulation. One end of its molecular structure attaches to oily ingredients whilst the other attaches to water, holding them in stable suspension.

On the skin, it deposits a thin conditioning film that softens the outer layer and helps reduce transepidermal water loss, contributing to a smoother feel and appearance.

Clinical Evidence & References

Butylene Glycol Stearate is widely used in cosmetic formulations and has a history of safe use. However, dedicated clinical studies specifically examining this ingredient's efficacy on human skin are limited in the published literature.

Its safety profile is well-established through regulatory approval and use, and it is generally recognised as well-tolerated. Any benefits to skin condition are likely incremental and attributable to its humectant and emollient properties rather than active therapeutic effects.

How to Use

Butylene Glycol Stearate is a formulation ingredient rather than an active compound you would apply directly. It will be present in your moisturiser, serum, or other skincare product as part of the formulation. No special application technique is needed beyond using the product as directed.

Safety & Precautions

Butylene Glycol Stearate is generally well-tolerated and has a long history of safe use in cosmetics. It is not known to be a common irritant or sensitiser, though individual sensitivities are always possible.
